When is Dak Prescott an NFL free agent?

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys crashed out of the NFL playoffs with their loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round on Sunday. The quarterback struggled to deliver the goods for his team and has come under heavy criticism ever since.

While there are rumors of a potential trade for Prescott, it won’t be easy for the Cowboys to execute a move for the player. The 29-year-old is on a huge deal with the NFC East powerhouse and still has two years left on his current deal. Prescott will only be a free agent in the 2024 offseason.

Prescott signed a four-year deal worth a reported $160 million in 2021. This year, he will earn a base salary of $31,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $49,130,000 and a dead cap value of $89,070,000.

It now remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will look to trade Prescott in the offseason. The quarterback has been linked with a move away from the team, but there are no concrete reports suggesting that he will leave Dallas.

Dak Prescott enjoyed a good run during the regular season. He racked up 2,860 yards on 261 passes with 23 touchdowns. However, he also threw 15 interceptions.

The quarterback added 182 yards and one touchdown on the ground across 12 games for Dallas.

He carried his good run of play into the wild-card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prescott threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns in an impressive display against the Buccaneers.

However, he struggled against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round. The two-time Pro Bowler managed a mere 206 yards on 23 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Jerry Jones will now have to make a decision to make over Prescott during the offseason. Will the Cowboys owner opt to keep the quarterback or trade him? Only time will tell.
