Dustin Poirier teases location of next fight with cryptic tweet

[ad_1]

Dustin Poirier is widely regarded as one of the best lightweights in the sport of MMA and the UFC organization. ‘The Diamond’ currently holds the No. 2 spot in the UFC’s official lightweight rankings. However, he hasn’t competed since last November.

Poirier now appears to have shed light upon the potential location of his next fight. The former interim UFC lightweight champion took to Twitter to hint at where he could make his much-awaited return to the octagon.

Suggesting that he could fight in his native New Orleans next, Poirier tweeted:

“UFC New Orleans??!!”

The UFC organized multiple events in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in its early days, including 16: Battle in the Bayou, UFC 18: The Road to the Heavyweight Title, and UFC 27: Ultimate Bad Boyz. However, the world’s premier MMA organization hasn’t hosted many events in ‘NOLA’ since September of 2000.

The UFC has held just two events in New Orleans since then, namely UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger in 2011 and UFC Fight Night: Boetsch vs. Henderson in 2015.

However, given the rise in popularity of the UFC and MMA as a whole in recent years, the consensus is that the division could host more events in the Louisiana city moving forward.

The UFC hasn’t made an official announcement regarding a potential event in New Orleans, Louisiana, for its 2023 schedule.

Dustin Poirier announces his intention to compete in his next UFC fight in 2023

Dustin Poirier’s most recent fight saw him secure a third-round submission victory over Michael Chandler in their back-and-forth lightweight showdown in November 2022.

Despite being the No. 2-ranked UFC lightweight, Poirier isn’t in the title picture right now. The former interim champion previously came up short twice in his bid to win the undisputed UFC lightweight title.

Regardless, Dustin Poirier is still considered to be a fan favorite. In response to a Twitter user who expressed his eagerness to see him fight again, ‘The Diamond’ indicated that he could return to the octagon soon.

Poirier tweeted:

“What’s good @ufc ?”

Presently, all the other top-five ranked UFC lightweights have either fought recently or are booked to fight soon. Ergo, it’s unclear as to who Dustin Poirier will face next. Nevertheless, fans can expect details about it to unravel in the days to come.

Moreover, Poirier recently responded to a tweet, insinuating that he’d be open to a rematch with Justin Gaethje in a number-one contender’s matchup. He alluded that the winner of that fight could then face reigning undisputed UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 on October 21 in Abu Dhabi.
